Frequently asked questions about wasps.
Do wasps die off over winter?
Yes. The majority of hibernating queen wasps will die, however, it's more likely to be from predatory insects like spiders rather than the cold. Warm winters also have a negative effect on survival rates as this causes the queens to emerge to early and then starve due to lack of food.
All the worker wasps will die off as winter approaches. Adult wasps feed on sugar based liquid foods, usually nectar from trees and flowers. As winter nears these food sources stop and the wasps starve to death.
Will wasps return to the same nest they used last year?
No. As a rule, wasps never return to the previous years nesting site. If you do to get a wasp's year after year it's because you have a good location. A nice sunny roof or wall with a lot of gaps for wasps to gain access and plenty old wood nearby that the wasps can use to build a nest
I see a lot of wasps flying around but I can't see a nest.
There is probably a food source which the scout wasps have located and taken back to the nest. Wasps swarm feed. If the scout finds a food source, it will go back to the nest to send a message to other wasps to join in feeding. In a very short space of time one wasp will become hundreds. Wasps will also look for dead wood to provide material to build nests, if you have lot of wasps hanging around fence panels or shed walls it's because they're stripping the wood off to build a new nest.
What do wasps eat?
Wasps always seek out dead flesh, sweet foods and trees or flowers that provide a sweet sap source.
How big do wasps nest get?
On average a common wasp nest will hold between 3,000 - 6,000 wasps, although some of the bigger nests can get up to 10,000 wasps at the Summer peak. German wasp nests (the nasty aggressive ones) are a lot smaller but can get up to around 1,000 individuals (a nest about the size of a beach ball).
Should I remove the wasp nest?
No. The nest was built because it's in a good location. Wasps don't return to old nests. If you remove the nest the location becomes available for another queen to build a nest the following year.
